PRESS RELEASE

The Don O'Melveny Gallery on Wilshire is thrilled to announce its first Solo Exhibition of the unique and exquisite encaustic paintings of Daniel Kaufman. Daniel believes that colors are the "Children of Light" and that great healing and inspiration comes from contemplating their beauty.

Famed art critic/curator Peter Frank has recently written of Daniel's wax paintings:

"Working in an unlikely medium, Daniel Kaufman confabulates unlikely tableaux--vibrant, expansive, luminous, luxurious and disorienting. Their ferociously visual topography results from Kaufman's unusual, even improbable, employment of the quintessential child's art medium, Crayola Crayons, in an exacting and dramatic process of physical accumulation through melting. The process engages both focused concentration and the effects of chance. The concentration pays off: Every accident is a happy one."

Daniel Kaufman's paintings in various media including pigment, ink, gouache and watercolor are in private collections nationwide.

Prominent Los Angeles art appraiser and collector Robert Levy wrote of Daniel's early paintings (1988-1995):

"Kaufman's work is original, unique, with a jeweler's delight in detail and a simultaneously macrocosmic effect that makes his best pieces enjoyable from a distance or very close up".

These same extraordinary qualities of Daniel's art have reached their ultimate and most original expression in Daniel's encaustic work of the last ten years.

Museum curator Michael Zakian (formerly Curator at the Palm Springs Desert Museum and now Chief Curator at the Frederick Weisman Museum in Malibu) compares Daniel's works to the American surrealists Knud Merrild and Boris Margo.
